Are you ready for a new public conversation on taxes, revenue, and the role of government?

When we started the Heroes’ Narrative project five years ago, we quickly learned that the discussion on taxes, revenue, and the role of government was lopsided. Political rhetoric, media coverage, and even kitchen table conversations have been dominated by the idea that lower taxes are always better and government is big, wasteful, and inefficient.

It’s time for a new strategy. Revenue and the state budget are at the root of so many of the priorities that our communities need to thrive. Whether your focus is education, the environment, economic justice, racial equity, health, or something else, your ability to advance good policies depends upon having revenue to accomplish those goals. It’s time for all of us to join the conversation, not just “tax and budget” focused organizations.

Over the last two years, we’ve been working alongside an incredible team of experts and community leaders, including Topos Partnership, One America, the WA State Budget and Policy Center, Sound Alliance, Spokane Alliance, and others to complete a comprehensive research project to test and develop best practices for communicating on revenue, taxes, and the role of government. The result is a communications toolkit designed to put this research into easy, everyday language that leads to a paradigm shift in public understanding of the role of government and revenue in shaping thriving communities and a strong economy.

We’re visiting seven cities across Washington state to meet with advocates, activists, and community leaders to reclaim the public dialogue on revenue and change the way we, as advocates, talk about funding our state’s priorities. We hope you’ll join us and register for one of our upcoming interactive communications trainings.
